Selena Marie Gomez is an American actress and singer-songwriter best known for her portrayal of Alex Russo on the Emmy Award winning Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place. Her father is Mexican American and her mother is of half Italian descent. She has starred in the television movies, Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. In 2010, Gomez made her theatrical film debut as Beatrice “Beezus” Quimby in Ramona and Beezus.

Before Disney, she had one of the kid roles on Barney & Friends. In 2008, she signed a record deal with Hollywood Records and contributed to the Tinker Bell, Another Cinderella Story and Wizards of Waverly Place soundtracks. Her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, released their debut studio album Kiss & Tell on September 29, 2009, which was certified Gold by RIAA on March 5, 2010.

In October 2008, Gomez was named UNICEF’s spokesperson for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, which encouraged children to raise money on Halloween to help children around the world. She said that she was “extremely excited” to “encourage other kids to make a difference in the world.” In August 2009, a 17-year-old Gomez became the youngest UNICEF ambassador ever, passing fellow songstress Hayley Westenra, who had been 18.

Shamita is the second and youngest daughter of Surendra and Sunanda Shetty. She was born in a traditional close-knit family that hails from the Bunt community of Udupi. Her parents are manufacturers of tamper-proof caps for the pharmaceutical industry and her native language is Tulu. Shamita Shetty attended St Anthony’s Girls High School in Chembur, Mumbai. She graduated from Sydenham College.

Shamita Shetty took a cue from sister Shilpa’s success in Bollywood when she decided to take up acting. Shetty made her debut in 2000 with the Yash Raj Films blockbuster Mohabbatein, which was directed by Aditya Chopra. Since Mohabbatein, she mostly found success in item numbers, including “Sharara Sharara” in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2001) and “Chori Pe Chori” in Saathiya (2002). Later Shetty found success as an actress with her first solo-hit Zeher. She worked once with her sister Shilpa Shetty in Fareb in that same year. She was a guest on Bigg Boss (Season 3) on Colors TV. She opted out of the show for her sister Shilpa’s marriage. She was out of the show on 14 November 2009 after staying for 7 weeks in the show on day 41.

It remains to be seen if she will reach the heights of success that Shilpa Shetty is currently enjoying.

A teenager who was born in Uzbekistan has become the first Muslim beauty contestant to be crowned Miss England. Hammasa Kohistani, 18, said she was “happy to make history” and was looking forward to representing England in the Miss World championships in China.

She was born in Tashkent, central Uzbekistan, after her parents were forced to flee Afghanistan. The brunette, who speaks six languages including Russian and Persian, was selected from 40 contestants.

She was crowned on Saturday night following the two-day competition at Liverpool’s Olympia Theatre. Dressed in an ivory white chiffon and silk ball gown designed and made by her mother, the teenager spoke of her joy at winning the title. “When they announced that I had won I thought I had misheard. I hoped they hadn’t, but it took a second to sink in.”

Asked about her feelings at being the first Muslim Miss England, she said: “I’m making history and I’m very happy. Hopefully I won’t be the last.” The student, who was known as Miss Maya after the Asian fashion house which sponsored her, has also been offered a part in a forthcoming Bollywood movie.

Since winning Miss England Hammasa has had TV interviews with Sky News and CNN and has appeared on GMTV and Lorraine Kelly Live. She has had innumerable press interviews and has appeared in national and international newspapers and magazines.
