Shalwar kamees is the dress worn by both women and men in northern South Asia and Central Asia. Traditionally, it has been worn in Afghanistan and areas comprising Pakistan. From the last century, the ladies of India have also adopted this dress in place of sari, the traditional dress of India. Shalwar or salwar (as pronounced in India) are loose pajama-like trousers. Shalwar are gathered at the waist and held up by a drawstring or an elastic band. The pants can be wide and baggy or more narrow, and even made of fabric cut on the bias.
The Western fashion trends have been moving heavily toward Pakistan fashion clothing and patterns for many years but the arrival of Pakistani salwar kameez in the western fashion world has been so fast that it can only be described as breath-taking fashion. So what is so hot about salwar kameez and why are Pakistani women all over the world going crazy over a Pakistani fashion trend that has been around for thousands of years in Pakistan? The answer is simple: Pakistani salwar kameez or shalwar kameez are filling a role that has been missing from the western fashion scene for years: graceful feminine elegance when you wear a Pakistani Shalwar qameez.
The kamees is usually cut straight and flat; older kamees use traditional cuts, as shown in the illustration above. Modern kamees are more likely to have European-inspired set-in sleeves. The neckline, sleeves and bottom edge (daaman) are many times decorated with embroidery or laces. The integral part of shalwar kamees is the dupatta – a long shawl wrapped around body or also to cover head in more conservative families. The shalwar kamees fashion has revolved around the cuts and lengths of shalwar and of kamees. And also of the print styles and color palette of the dupatta.

As we know, Lahore is a center of all types of Muslim fashion in Pakistan. All leading Muslim and Islamic fashions are first displayed in Lahore and all others follow suit. The major clothing markets offer the latest trends and styles of clothing articles regardless of the origin. A few years ago buying readymade stylish abayas in Lahore was not as easy as only the plain and classic ones were largely available. Women wanting to go for a unique look had to visit their tailors with designs in mind to create an exclusive look for themselves.
Recent years have brought forth a change in this though. Today there are retail stores for abayas and hijabs open all around the fashion central of Pakistan. People who understood the dilemma of the abayas clad women ventured into launching stylish boutiques that offer these garments in an assortment all colours, styles and designs. Embroidered and fancy to simple and classic all can be found under one roof with big name designers to back up their authenticity of distinctiveness.
Hiba joins us from Lahore Pakistan and sends some photos captured by herself. She is fashion designer and running her Boutique in Cantt area in Lahore. Hiba completes her education from Lahore and UK universities and selected the Pakistani markets to work. She thinks that Pakistan especially Lahore is heart of Asian fashion. She likes Major shopping areas like Liberty Market, City Towers, DHA, Fortress Stadium and Siddique Shopping Center that have outlets of abayas by different designers both local and foreign.
