Pakistani girls, much like their male counterparts are increasingly taking to credit card use. Credit cards have seen slow adoption in Pakistan largely due to the traditional South Asian and Islamic aversion to debt.
There is also considerable ignorance about the nature of credit card debt and how it can affect a household. However, the fact that girls are usually keener shoppers than boys has contributed greatly to their unique demand for credit cards.
Most major banks in Pakistan today offer credit cards to students and young people. UBL, Muslim Commercial Bank and Citibank all offer popular credit card versions from the major providers. But young people can often harbor unrealistic expectations about personal finance products – especially credit cards. They run the risk of irresponsible spending and accumulation of ever-greater amounts of debt. Close family ties in Pakistan can exert a positive role in debt and expenditure counseling, helping Pakistani girls to better manage their finances.
